Campaigners have welcomed the Government’s decision to put alcohol on equal footing with hard drugs in a new prevention strategy, as recognition of the serious affects of alcohol abuse on Irish society.

On the 21st of March last approximately 20 Young Pioneers from the South Limerick Region attended a Pioneer Activity Day. It took place in the Drombanna Day Care Centre.
The All Ireland Readoiri Finals of the Pioneer Association's Talent Competition was held on the last Saturday in February (28/02/09) in the Community Centre Kingscourt, Co. Cavan. The event was attended by over eight hundred patrons which included approximately 250 competitors both adult and young people. It is a magnificent venue and has just been extended recently.
Robert Shannon was recently appointed as the President of the Association.
From Durrus, West Cork, Robert has been an active member of the PTAA since childhood. He comes from a strong pioneering tradition and was until his presidential appointment was head of the Durrus-based branch of the Association.
Orlaith O’Callaghan was recently appointed to the post of Advocacy and Communications Manager with the Pioneer and Total Abstinence Association.
The Pioneers have launched a campaign focused on Temperance Sunday (22nd Feb 2009) calling on people to drink less during Lent 2009.
Last November on the Halloween Week-end a group of 40 Young Pioneers stayed in Kells, Co. Meath for the annual Pioneer Youth Weekend. The young people came from Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan, Westmeath, Louth, Kildare, Wexford, Limerick and Meath for a week end of fun and activities.
